March 17th: Captain Lawrence Oates left his grand Georgian home, Gestingthorpe Hall, near Halstead in Essex to set sail with Captain Scott on his ill-fated bid to be first to the South Pole. Less than two years later Oates uttered his famous last words: ‘I am just going outside and may be some time’. With that he stepped into an Antarctic blizzard. He sacrificed himself in a doomed attempt to save Scott and two other companions, believing he was slowing them down as they desperately tried to reach safety.

March 16th: Henry Cooper was retiring regardless of the result of his fight with Joe Bugner. At 37, the body was telling him enough was enough. His knees were showing signs of the long miles on the road, and his famous over-used left hand was seizing up so much that at times his wife had to comb his hair and even cut up his food. In many ways, time was running out.

March 13th: “Seeing him bowl at the MCG, listening to people bang on the advertising hoardings, and chanting Lill-eeee Lill-eeee was just amazing. It was moving, the way the supporters and his teammates responded to him”

Chappell's quote above could apply to most of the matches Lillee played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, but he is in fact talking about the 1977 Centenary Test, a match played to celebrate 100 years since the first Test was played, between Australia and England at the same venue.
