1881

March 23rd: Although the British had sent General Sir Frederick Roberts and reinforcements to South Africa, they were reluctant to continue a conflict that could be costly, messy and protracted. Also, the conciliatory tone adopted by the Boer negotiators made a settlement possible.

Major-General Sir Evelyn Wood (Colley's replacement) signed an armistice on 6 March 1881. Subsequently, a peace treaty was signed on 23 March, officially ending the war.

1934

March 23rd: Despite many attempts over the years, winning the Grand National and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in the same season is a notoriously difficult thing to do.

That’s probably why it has only ever been done once, and that was by Golden Miller in 1934.

One of the most famous racehorses in history, Golden Miller, is known for his incredible achievements in the 1930s. Nearly one hundred years on, he is as famous today as he was then.

March 22nd: The Princess of Wales says she is in the early stages of treatment after a cancer diagnosis.

In a video statement, Catherine says it was a "huge shock" after an "incredibly tough couple of months".

But she sent a positive message, saying: "I am well and getting stronger every day."

Details of the cancer have not been disclosed, but Kensington Palace says it is confident the princess will make a full recovery.

March 22nd: Liverpool 0-0 Nottingham Forest – March 18, 1978 – Wembley

Liverpool 0-1 Nottingham Forest (replay) – March 22, 1978 – Old Trafford

The Reds’ first appearance in a League Cup final ended with a 1-0 defeat against Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest in controversial fashion at Old Trafford after a replay.

March 21st: More than 50 black people were killed when police opened fire on a "peaceful" protest in the South African township of Sharpeville.

Eye-witnesses said men, women and children fled 'like rabbits' as up to 300 officers began randomly shooting into a 5,000-strong crowd outside the municipal offices in Sharpeville.

1959

March 21st: The annually-held Grand National championships are a pretty fantastic time for gaming enthusiasts from all over the world. And such a typically fabulous racing occasion was the 1959 National, which buzzy sporting contest was won by Oxo, a still little-known horse at the time.

This marked the 113th unveiling of the famously competitive horse-riding affair...usually run at the Aintree Racecourse, a few miles from Liverpool in England. Taking place on 21 March, it has been fittingly remarked as being one of the most exciting versions ever, with a couple of firsts that rendered it a particularly memorable clash.

March 20th: Princess Anne and her husband Captain Mark Phillips have escaped an apparent kidnap attempt in which four people were wounded.

The royal couple were returning to Buckingham Palace along Pall Mall when their chauffer-driven Rolls-Royce was forced to halt by another car which blocked their route.

March 20th: The football World Cup has been stolen while on exhibition at Central Hall in Westminster, London.
The £30,000 solid gold Jules Rimet trophy disappeared while a church service was taking place in another part of the building.

Thieves removed the cup from the "Sport with Stamps" display at the Stampex exhibition, but stamps worth £3m were left behind.

March 19th: Some comedic talents are relatively simple to define. Some are much more difficult to encapsulate. Some, well, some are just pure...magic. That latter definition might as well have been created solely for one particular talent. A giant talent housed within a body every bit as big as its ability. That man was Tommy Cooper. And he was the magic of comedy personified.

Tommy Cooper was born in Caerphilly, South Wales on 19th March 1921. He was two months premature, possibly the last time in his life that he was early.

1938

March 19th: As the nation gears up for the final round of the Guinness Six Nations this weekend, it’s hard to imagine a time when rugby wasn’t on our screens, but today is the anniversary of the first televised rugby match, a Calcutta Cup match between England and Scotland.

On March 19th 1938, 83 years ago, the BBC broadcast the first ‘Six Nations’ game in which Scotland, captained by Wilson Shaw, beat Herbert Toft’s English side 21-16.
