June 24th: This year (2018) marks the 50th anniversary of the Wimbledon Championships, which get underway tomorrow, going open - a switch that has transformed the fortunes of generations of players, not to mention the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club which has hosted its event in south-west London since 1877.

June 26th: Len Hutton was chosen to represent his country for the first time on 26th June
1937 against New Zealand. He had a rough start to Lord's, making 0 and 1, but he was quickly into his stride with 100 at Old Trafford.

June 28th: Heavyweight boxing’s most infamous rematch occurred 25 years ago – but what was really going through Mike Tyson’s mind when he bit chunks out of rival Evander Holyfield’s ears in front of a disbelieving MGM Grand?

The clash, which broke pay-per-view records on 28 June 1997, was billed as ‘The Sound and the Fury’ but is now better known as ‘The Bite Fight’.

June 29th: In their World Cup opener England had beaten Chile 2-0, courtesy of talisman Stan Mortensen, whilst the USA had been beaten 3-1 by the Spanish. It meant that a win for England would all but seal their progression and send the USA packing back to North America. However, on that famous day a miracle would occur... the Miracle on Grass.

June 30th: Two goals from Ronaldo secured the World Cup for Brazil as they claimed a deserved victory over Germany in the final in Yokohama. The Inter Milan star struck twice in the second half to settle an entertaining contest.

1903

July 1st:  The first Tour de France bicycle race begins as 60 riders start the six-stage, 1,509-mile (2,429km) loop from Montgeron to Paris. Nineteen days later, spectators will cheer Maurice Garin as he rides into the Paris velodrome almost three hours ahead of the second-place finisher.

2009

July 5th: On July 5, 2009 Roger Federer rewrote history when he outlasted Andy Roddick, 5-7, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5), 3-6, 16-14, on Centre Court. Federer not only captured his sixth Wimbledon trophy, but set a new all-time record by becoming the first man in tennis history to win 15 Grand Slam titles.

1907

July 6th: The first official race was held on the 6th July 1907 and was greeted by the press as a ‘Motor Ascot’. Because Brooklands was the world’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit, there were no established rules to follow. To begin with, many of the procedures were based on horse racing traditions, partly in an attempt to attract a ready-made audience to this new and curious sport. Cars assembled in the ‘paddock,’ were ‘shod’ with tyres, weighed by the ‘Clerk of the Scales’ for handicapping and drivers were even instructed to identify themselves by wearing coloured silks in the manner of jockeys.

1985

July 7th: On this day, July 7, in 1985, Boris Becker became the youngest man to triumph at Wimbledon, defeating Kevin Curren in the final (6-3, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4). Aged 17 years and 288 days, not only was he at the time the youngest man to ever win a Grand Slam (a record later beaten by Michael Chang at Roland-Garros, in 1989), but he was also the first unseeded man and the first German man to lift the trophy at the All England Club.

2017

July 8th: A long-range penalty three minutes from time from Owen Farrell snatched a draw for the Lions in an epic third Test and with it a share of the series.

The All Blacks had led 12-6 at half-time through tries from Ngani Laumape and Jordie Barrett, and had blown at least two other clear try-scoring opportunities.

But three penalties from Farrell and a monster from Elliot Daly from beyond halfway tied it up at 12-12 with 20 minutes to go.

2006

July 9th: The final moments of Zinedine Zidane’s international career were unlike any other. But Zidane was a player unlike any other.

FIFA World Cup™ winner. European champion. UEFA Champions League winner. Serie A and La Liga title holder. Three-time FIFA World Player of the Year. These are just the highlights of one of the greatest players to ever grace the game.

And just as the man affectionately known as ‘Zizou’ had a second global triumph within touching distance, a rush of blood to the head changed the path of history.

July 10th: Britain's Andy Murray became Wimbledon champion for the second time with a superb performance against Canadian sixth seed Milos Raonic in the final.

The Scot, 29, dismantled the Raonic serve in a 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-2) victory to repeat his triumph of 2013 and claim a third Grand Slam title.

July 11th: It was fitting that the first person to play a hundred Tests would have the initials MCC. It was also fitting that he would end up having a name as grand as Michael Colin Cowdrey, Baron Cowdrey of Tonbridge, CBE later in his life.
